Saving Money on Heating Your Home

By Philipstream Subscribe to RSS | December 2nd 2011 | Views:

When it comes to keeping your home warm in those cold, Germantown winters, it’s very, very easy to burn through a lot of extra energy if you’re not careful. You don’t need to devote your every waking hour optimizing your heater’s efficiency, but if you keep these tips in mind, you should see your heating bills get lower and lower without sacrificing comfort.

Look for Heat Leaks

One of the easiest and quickest ways to get a little more out of your heater is to check around the house for heat leaks. These could be windows that are often left cracked a little open, the vent in the laundry room or in the bathroom, or a backdoor that leaves a good half inch gap for heat to escape. In any of these cases, you can usually use some form of insulation such as a heat-blocking cushion for the bottom of the door.

Homogenize the Heat

A good way to save money on heating is to make sure that the whole house stays roughly the same temperature. It’s not uncommon to want to crank the thermostat way up when you go to bed because you’ve been heating the living room instead of the bedroom all day. To save money, try to leave doors open throughout the house, or at least cracked open, so that the air can circulate and keep the whole room warm. This way you won’t have any of those spikes jumping up and down, you’ll just keep the whole home at an even, comfortable temperature all day.

Keep Your Furnace Tuned Up

Once a year, preferably before winter, not after, you should have your furnace or heating system tuned up by a professional. This is a small expense that may save you hundreds and hundreds of dollars in the long run. If you’re not watching the thermostat regularly, it can be very easy to waste a ton of cash on an inefficient heater or furnace. By just giving it a quick tune up, you can spend a few dollars now, and save a ton in the future. Think of it not as an expense, but as an investment.

At Don Hoffacker, we have a lot of customers calling in for repairs in the middle of winter. We’re glad to help out, but happier if we can “teach a man to fish” so to speak. In short, if you give us a call at the start of winter, before there are any problems, you can ensure that you won’t need to call us in the middle of the night, bundled up in a dozen blankets, looking at your breath and asking us to come fix your heater first thing in the morning.

In Florida, they get summer all year round. In Colorado, it tends to stay pretty cold. Here in Maryland, we get all four seasons, and we get them in full force.
