Cybercrime- a National and International Threat

By Mark Bennett Subscribe to RSS | February 16th 2012 | Views:

With the advancement in technology, anything and everything is available these days with the exception of various risks involved. While online banking, electronic fraud and identity theft are three of the most serious risks. What induces these criminal risks? It is cybercrimes.

Yes, cybercrime is behind this. People who indulge in cybercrime are aware that once a person is doing online banking, credit card validation codes and other required information, such as private information; they can easily be stolen without having to answer to anyone. Many banks also do not have many ideas and systems to protect their customer's accounts.

A recent survey shows that most people put on their financial details online for purchasing and doing other things without thinking about the advancement in technology. They forget how much technology has evolved and more prone they are to being robbed. It is just like not leaving your house under the protection of security systems like ADT Home Security. Meanwhile, a significant number of professionals have found it difficult to access their online transaction accounts because of their bank’s inability to control the cyber thefts. Seriously, high-profile hackings have been making the headlines lately, prompting questions about data safety on the internet.

It is becoming increasingly challenging for major companies to stay one step ahead of cyber-criminals. Cyber-criminals have now devised a malware designed to infiltrate portable documents, commonly known as PDF. Various defense and security analysts have cited that PDF attacks were aimed at corporate and government institutions and were part of sophisticated schemes aimed at stealing information from systems otherwise thought to be secure and protected by firewalls.

Several sources from corporate companies have confirmed that their personal and business information were targeted by the cyber-criminals. These attacks are happening every second and all the time. These attackers appear to be nicely funded and the attacks could come from an unknown country or corporate entity. So, it becomes more difficult to track the offenders.

It may be hard for us to realize it, but security breaches can happen at any time. These cyber-attacks are becoming more frequent and severe with most businesses suffering as least more than one data breach in a year. As these cyber crimes continue to escalate, it’s important for you to learn some preventative measures before hackers penetrate deep into your company’s data system and silently steal information.

Always be aware of the types of personal data such as social security numbers, credit card numbers which could belong to a shareholder, board member, employee or customer should not be openly disclosed. It means never try to note in down on a piece of a paper or store it in your mail. Try to memorize or find another feasible method to keep it hidden from cyber criminals and robbers.

It could also be commendable if you could determine whether your company has procedures in place for responding to a possible data breach and you could help to make sure that those procedures are complied on a regular basis.

Carefully think twice before making any financial transaction even if involves your company and personal accounts. Nowadays cyber-criminals have become so much clever that in an instance they can hack into your transaction process in a matter of seconds. You would not know until you see some of the misappropriation in the funds. Anyhow whether it is the company’s accounts or your account, the loss is going to be yours as people may blame it because of your irresponsibility.
