Wakeboard Surfing: the Newest Trend in Water Sports

By Ted Muise Subscribe to RSS | May 29th 2012 | Views:

Surfing is an exciting sporting activity that has gained so much popularity in recent years. No doubt this fame was fueled by popular media, which showed images of people having the time of their lives as they ride the waves with their surf boards. While surfing is indeed fun and challenging, the fact is that venturing into open seas to ride potentially lethal waves has so many risks, and can be fatal for the inexperienced.

The good thing is that for those who want to experience the thrill of surfing without its inherent risks, there is “wakesurfing”. This sport is characterized by a person riding the “wake” (series of waves) left behind by the boat as it speeds off. The rider uses a tow rope to pull himself out of the water, and, upon gaining balance, releases the rope and surfs the waves. For this sport, traditional surf boards are often used, but short boards made specifically for “wakesurfing” would do best.

Since people are after safety, boat speed is often slow, ranging from 9 to 14 miles per hour. Boats create smaller waves than those created by oceanic currents (which can rise up to several meters). This makes the waves more stable and easier to ride, with the danger of flipping over and being crushed by the pressure of a massive ocean wave is eliminated.

Aside from this, wakeboard surfing has other benefits. Providing a fun exercise for enthusiasts is its most obvious exercise, as the process of preparing for the sport and using your strength to grip the rope requires lots of strength. When wakesurfing, you are essentially performing a full body exercise. In addition, you get to enjoy the good view while hanging onto that rope.

As an outdoor activity, wakeboard surfing is something which many people can access. There are many sports shops out there where wakesurfing gears can easily be bought. Also, once you’re out there on the beach to wakesurf, you get to meet a lot of new and interesting people, thus making wakesurfing a great way to socialize.

Since you’re on the beach already, you can take the opportunity to do other things alongside wakesurfing. For one, you can choose to go water skiing, or you can simply bathe in the sun. Surfing the waves with wakesurf boards is safe and easy to learn, making this activity too good to have to pass.

So if you’re planning on spending your next vacation on the beach, consider getting on those wakesurf boards with your friends and family. You can learn more about wakesurf boards on and
