At a recent History Icons of Hollywood auction held in Beverly Hills, Steve McQueen’s racing suit from the 1971 film classic Le Mans sold for nearly $1 million. Originally estimated to be sold for $200,000-$300,000, the HinchmanNomex racing suit belonging to the character Michael Delaney went to the winning bid of $984,000. For almost 40 years, the suit was owned by Timothy Davies who at the age of 12 won the racing suit from a studio-sponsored contest.

While not, the only Le Mans piece that went up for auction for a large sum, The Porsche driven by McQueen in the film went for $1.25 million. And one of the seven DeLorean cars used in the 80’s-iconic Back To The Future trilogy, the one Michael J. Fox drove through a drive-in screen to activate the flux capacitor and travel back to a battle between Indians and the U.S. Cavalry in the third film. The car was sitting on a lot in Universal Studios until 2003 when a private collector purchased and restored it. At the auction it sold for $541,000, meeting its $400,000-$600,000 expectation. Meaning that not only did McQueen’s Racing Suit shatter its expectations more than threefold, it outsold one of the most iconic and memorable time machines ever constructed by nearly double.

Other objects for auction included the couch used on Friends where Matt Le Blanc and David Schwimmer were paid $1 million an episode to sit on while attempting humor as well as the ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz that Judy Garland evaded the Wicked Witch of The West over. Both of which didn’t near the total Steve McQueen’s sporty-gear went for. While all this rage over a racing suit may seem insane, it hasn’t been uncommon for McQueen memorabilia to go for so much. A 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso once owned by the actor sold for $2.3 million in 2007. The actor’s 1971 400 Cross fetched $144,500, 20 times the amount a high-quality ordinary 400 Cross would catch.
