Sachin Tendular- from cricketer to a politician?

By Poojarajput Subscribe to RSS | May 21st 2012 | Views:

Sachin Tendulkar, the God of Indian cricket team has become the man of the moment. Being nominated to Rajya Sabha by Congress, Sachin has attained a big achievement. However his nomination has created frenzy all over the state.

The suprising decision of Sachin for Rajya Sabha when there were talks about conferring him with Bharat Ratna has faced many criticisms. Being nominated to Rajya Sabha, Sachin is the first ever cricket batsman to be honoured by such nomination. The master blaster gave a heroic performance and completed his 100 international centuries, a long awaited dream in March 2012. When the nomination decision was been taken, Sachin along with his wife Anjali were present at the residence of the Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Sachin has been a splendid batsman throughout his career. Will he be a good politician too? Is there any political motive of the Congress behind this nomination? Was Bharat Ratna award not enough to honour Sachin’s contribution to the nation? All his questions have started after the nomination decision. However, his nomination has not gone well with many of Sachin fans and former cricketers. While those who are against the nomination of Sachin for Rajya Sabha feels that he should stick to cricketer and let a deserving candidate stand for the nomination, the others feel that inclusion of an active sportsperson to Rajya Sabha would create awareness about the challenges in sports and in turn empower the youths. With nomination of Sachin for Rajya Sabha, talks about nominating Sourav Ganguly too have made their way. A member generally gets six months duration to take his decision whether he would like to be associated with the party or not. Sachin has acted immaturely by calling on Sonia Gandhi. While Bal Thackeray, Shive sena chief has called the nomination as a political gimmick in his mouthpiece Saamna, Ramdev Baba feels the nomination as an act of defence from the Congress against the attacks by the opposition. The argument that Tendulkar would not be able to devote enough time to Rajya Sabha because of cricket obligations falls flat as the Parliaments sits for six months in one year.

Some also argue that a cricketer cannot be nominated to Rajya Sabha as per our Constitution. However, the nomination of journalist’s inspite of no mention in the Consitution dismisses the argument. Tendulkar earned the respect again of his millions of fans when he said that he has been nominated because he is a sportsperson and not a politician.
