Man possesses great qualities to understand nature. He is always intrigued by the concept of creation. Scientists claim that man appeared in the evolution of life on earth just 400,000 years back.

But it is estimated that the age of the earth is about 4.3 billion years. It is not hard to imagine what has happened over the past 100 to 200 years. The world has seen major industrial growth in the last 200 years and in the last two decades, the world of computers and technology has revolutionized in every industry possible, from agriculture to astronomy.

All this can be considered excellent achievements of man, but there is a darker side to it. Many people are gripped with fear and horror when they talk about the end of the world. It is a common belief that the world will soon come to an end, which technically means that life on earth will completely be destroyed giving way for a new beginning. Well, the year of destruction? 2012.

There are different end-of-the-world theories proposed and they are very interesting to read. The biggest proposition that sounds very true is the solar flare theory. Solar flares are the high energy explosive activities that happen on the surface of the sun.

It is believed that the radiation from these flares can be very destructive to the earth. Primarily, the intense waves can cause disruption to the earth's magnetic field, which can lead to big time electrical and electronic damage. But solar flares are not new to the earth. It has seen countless number of solar flares in the past, but what makes the difference now.

Since the dawn of the 19th century, the fields of electrical and electronics have seen many new inventions. These inventions have revolutionized the way of living for the most part and it is very hard to imagine life without these 'so-called' comforts. People have taken things so much for granted that going back to the conventional ways of living is impossible. In this scenario, if a solar flare were to strike the earth in this year, the amount of destruction by and large would cause the failure of almost all the electrical and electronic appliances.

Communications would become a huge problem since the satellites will also be affected. No more traffic signals; cars equipped with microprocessor-based ignition won't start; transfomers across the globe would fail leaving the entire world with massive power outage; internet will be a thing of the past and every business done with computers will come to a standstill. Billing, processing orders, packaging, cargo ships and airliners can't move an inch without power. It appears as if it is blown out of proportion, but has this not been happening to earth already?

Well, yes, it has been, but we had not seen huge damages in the past because during that time man was not so badly dependent on technology, but today, it's a different scene. With all these technologies failing, man would lose at least 100 years and start doing everything from scratch. It would be almost 50 years of time that it would take to restore power to where it is right now, but with population increasing day by day, it would be always doubly insufficient. Businesses have to reinvent themselves from the past by adopting conventional ways that was followed 100 years ago. The money-spinning entertainment industry will suffer the maximum damage as most of the advancements have been happening in this field over the past few years.

The awareness among the public has risen over the last three years, especially with movies like 2012 conveying the message though in an exaggerated way. Let truth be told! The nature will take its own course and man can never beat nature.

I had a chance to check out some of the forums on my Verizon FiOS Internet; thousands of people comment on the topic, some attribute religious factors; some talk about ethnic beliefs; some say man has reached the peak of modern science; they're all good to hear, but all one can do is just sit, wait and watch; Will the world come to an end or not in 2012? God knows!!
