History of Mens Ties – a Journey from Croatian Soldier to Modern Man

The history of mens ties is as colorful and textured as the tie itself. Mens tie from its early days in China and Rome has travelled a great distance, evolving a great deal on its way to reach modernity.

The modern man’s staple decorative garment, a modern necktie comes in variety of different colors, designs, textures, and material, and it is worn by most of the men in twenty-first century, particularly in American and European nations.

The origin of this garment can be traced directly to Croatia, although the earliest evidence of wearing a cloth piece around the neck is found in the statues of Terracotta Warriors in the time of Emperor Shi Huang Ti of the Quinn Dynasty, somewhere around 2000 years ago. These warriors wore silk cord around their neck to express their elite status. Necktie in some form was also worn by Romans. It is said that Roman orators used to wear cloths around their neck to keep their throat warm.

The first evidence of use of the modern tie, in the form it is worn today, can be traced down to the time of the Thirty Years' War, which happened between 1618 and 1648. During the war, it was worn by Croatian mercenaries of Croatian Military Frontier, which didn’t fail to attract the attention of Parisians, and because of the difference in Croatian and French language (and confusion caused by it), the garment was called cravat.

Wearing cravat around one’s neck became fashion in the late seventeenth century in Europe, when people lapped this new Croatian dress item. The tie was still worn by elites, and it was the industrial revolution of the 19th century that brought mens tie into the hands of the commoners.

During the industrial revolution, when farmers from far-off villages started to come to the cities and factory towns for employment they saw the use of tie and their desire to be seen among the elite and the masters (business owners who owned factories), they used their newly-acquired purchasing power to get mens ties for themselves. This brought mens tie around the necks of common people.

With the advancement of the empire, the story of necktie also moved further. Wherever Europeans went they took this piece of decorative garment with them, and it caught hold of people’s imagination. It was in this manner that tie reached the United States, where a tailor named Jesse Langsdorf was waiting for it to come to redesign it. It was he who, in 1924, gave the modern necktie the look it possesses.

Mens ties soon became a fashion statement, and by the 1950s, it was seen as a staple in men’s dressing. It was said that a man is not fully dressed until he had worn his tie. At the same time, a tie also became a symbol of conformity, the notion which got shattered in the coming decades.

c In 2011, a necktie is a personal statement which a person wears under their collars. It still denotes conformity, but not entirely.
