An important entity of the fashion industry since ages, the ribbon or the riband serves much like an icing of a cake. Being originated back in the 17th century, the grosgrain fabric entered the world of ribbons in the United States in 1920s and the legacy continues till date.

The Grosgrain Ribbon is available in a variety of colors and patterns. It is primarily made from silk but wool and mohair also contribute to its manufacture. It is characterized by a heavier weft than the warp and is woven in a Plain Weave pattern, with ribbed visage.

Generally, lustrous varieties of the usually dull fabric are used to make the grosgrain ribbon.

Advantages of the Grosgrain Ribbon:

Being less ostentatious, it is ideal apparel for evening wear and hence, the grosgrain scores a point over the more blatant silk and satin varieties. It is a strong, heavy and stiff fabric, which does not wear with time as easily as silk or satin, and therefore can be used in a lot of purposes which not only include fashion but also for book binding and restoration purposes, and to handle bulk fabrics.

Uses of the Grosgrain Ribbon:

It is widely used as an evening wear; mostly as lapel ornamentations of elite dress coats, tuxedos, overcoats, dinner jackets, etc. and is popular for decorating hats too. It is also useful as a hem material in dress cuts.

.

Grosgrain Ribbon and the Market:

A quarter-inch 50 yard long plain grosgrain ribbon costs around 2.75 U.S.D. while a 3-inch 50 yard long ribbon prices at 28 U.S.D.

The grosgrain ribbon is also available in polka-dot and Swiss-dot varieties at a little higher price.

Companies like Tea-party Ribbons LLC, Party Spin, All the Makings, and American Crafts deal in the Grosgrain Ribbon market.
