Medical Radiation Imaging Technology: a Great Career Choice

By Pooja Sharma Subscribe to RSS | January 18th 2012 | Views:

Medical Radiation Imaging is an ultra sophisticated technology enabling the formation of very high resolution two and three dimensional images of the body parts for the diagnosis of various abnormalities and diseases.

The History of Medical Radiation Imaging

Till recently, the word “Medical Imaging” induced the images of X-Ray in the mind. But X-rays is just one of the parts of Medical Imaging. Preceding the end of nineteenth century, physicians all over the world clearly lacked tools and technology to diagnose the internal organs without cutting it open, causing a lot of discomfort to the patient. However, with the serendipity of X-Ray discovery by William Roentgen in the year 1895, the face of Medical Radiation Imaging changed overnight paving the way for the development of many technologies like MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CT (Computerized Tomography), PET (Positron Emission Tomography), Ultrasonography and so on

Modalities of the Medical Radiation Imaging

Various modalities of Medical Imaging are:

1. Diagnostic radiology: It simply involves the use of X-Rays producing a radiographic image of the tissues. This imaging is particularly suitable for broken bones.

2. Computerized Tomography: The poor image quality with low contrast limited the use of radiology. In the year 1972, Computerized Tomography was introduced and till date, it is considered as one of the greatest advancements in the history of medical sciences. The latest machines have a fast scanner producing high resolution images.

3. Diagnostic Ultrasound: Here high frequency acoustic impulses are emitted into the patient’s body producing images.

4. Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Under the influence of a very strong magnetic field, a patient is placed. The proton spin density and relaxation times produce images.

5. Radioisotope Imaging: Here, some radioisotope tagged chemicals are introduced inside the patient’s body which after decay produces images. It is helpful for monitoring various physiological functions of the body.

Various other techniques are Single Photon Emission Tomography, Positron Emission Tomography, Electrical Impedance Tomography, etc.

Career Prospects

Since the modalities are inexhaustible, so are the career avenues. These professionals can work as Ultrasound Technicians, Radiologists, Radiologic Technologists, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and many more. A person desiring to enter this field can get enrolled for a two/three year diploma course. The person must be a 10th pass for a six semester course while he/she should be 12th pass for a four semester course.

Anyone who is inclined towards entering this domain must understand that patience, attention to detail and an empathetic attitude is desirous.

A lot of universities in India and abroad are offering diploma level courses in Medical radiation/imaging technology. One of the upcoming academies offering a multitude of courses in Ultrasound, CT/MRI and Paramedical training is Wellwishers.

Wellwishers academy(from the house of Marvel group with brands like Mothers pride, Presidium, Adiva etc., under its belt) is an enterprise striving to link all the knowledge gaps by training healthcare professionals in the most recent developments in medicine. The academy will offer hands-on training conducted by the veterans in the field with a sole motto of imparting the academic excellence.
