Obviously, you know what a television aerial is. Adding to your definition, a television aerial is a device that is specifically designed for reception of over-the-air broadcast transmissions. Different channels that you are able to see in your television are just because of the television aerial. A television aerial can also be said as a television antenna. As a standard, a television aerial receives signals that are transmitted at frequencies between 41 MHz to 250 MHz in VHF band and 470 MHz to 960 MHz in UHF band. In order to receive the signals between above-mentioned frequencies, your television aerial is fitted with multiple conductors. These conductors represent different wavelengths they receive. In case you know, your older television aerial must be the one that receives analog signals. It is a common practice to change your antenna's direction in order to receive different set of channels. But, generally, only if you know, your older analog-transmission-receiving antenna is compatible with digital transmissions too. In most of the cases, your older television aerial would enable you to watch digital channels on your television. It is because of the compatibility. The newer antennas, however, are designed to be compatible with each and every signal that is transmitted. Largely, you would not be able to find any major difference in design of your older antenna and the one that you wish to get installed (digital).

Lately, more number of people are choosing to get digital television aerials installed as a replacement for their older ones. It is merely a selling strategy by the companies that promise to give you better reception quality. If your old television aerial is compatible with receiving digital signals, it will be able to transfer all the digital channels to your TV set. So, in short, you need to replace your old television aerial with a new and more expensive so-called “digital” television aerial. In addition to all this, some companies also offer special or HD (high-definition) antennas at higher price claiming to give better audio-visual experience, which is again a selling strategy. Actually, your digital antenna will be able to receive all the digital and HD transmissions, if any.

If your older antenna is not compatible with digital transmissions, we would suggest you to get it replaced by a digital television aerial, as you would be able to see many more channels without changing the positions of your antenna.
