Wireless Bridge – Understanding the Basics

We have heard the term Wireless Bridge very often and have used it too at the workplace without understanding its role. So, what exactly is a wireless bridge anyway and how does it work? Simply put, a wireless bridge is a device that enables networks of users to connect with each other without using any wires no matter how long the distance is. So, these networks could exist in the same building or may be several miles away from each other but can still stay connected after installation of well positioned antennas.

There are various kinds of wireless bridges now in use. The most common type is the Point to Point wireless bridging that is easy to configure and often used to connect networks in two different locations with the help of a wireless bridge installed at each location. The other type, point to multi-point bridging, is relatively more complicated and as the name suggests, is used to connect multiple locations wirelessly. This kind of bridging enables users of multiple networks to share the same network resources by staying connected with the bridge at the main location called as the root or base station bridge. As such, all data must first pass through this bridge so that it can be accessed by all users across multiple networks connected to it.

Large corporations, public safety applications, and various facilities employ this type of bridging. For a Point to Point Wireless Bridge, a detailed survey of the site would be necessary. A pole or tower then needs to be installed on the rooftop to facilitate the connection. You will have to factor in various things like the distance, wireless protocol, and frequency before you choose wireless bridge that’s matches your requirements.
