What is it that makes a good driver?

You might think that there are not so many things that affect ones driving skills. What really makes a good driver and how much can skills vary when we talk about driving.

There are different skills but there are also many different vehicles. When you know how to use one, it should not be so difficult to learn the next one.

If you know how to drive a bike you should be able to learn motorcycle as well. If you master motorcycle, you sure do know how to ride a bike.

When talking about cars and driving, the things that affect the difficulty of the driving are naturally the weight of the car, the power of the car, the handling of the car and the tyres (in Finnish: renkaita) the car is riding on. These elements combine the tools that you should base your driving skills on.

What differs a good driver from a bad driver is the fact that a good driver can still run the vehicle if one or more on the previous mentioned key functions of the car fail. A good driver should be prepared for changes in the power, handling, tyre loss or even sudden change on the weight.

A good driver can also predict different situations that you might run into when driving. Predictability comes mostly with experience but it is also something that people either have or they don’t.

Bad driver can’t tell the difference for example driving with a bad tyre or a good tyre. The difference there is quite significant. If a good driver is driving with a bad tyre and a bad grip, he or she is able to control the car to a certain extend but he or she recognizes the situation and is predicting the possible slides and sudden changes in the grip of the car.

Overall the differences between a bad driver and a good driver can be evened out with a lot of training and experience but there still are some major differences between a truly good driver and the not so good one. No matter whether you’re a good or a bad driver, you should always have your skills trained and be able to drive in a predictable way.
