Until they experience becoming a victim of burglary, they simply don’t think that crime can happen to them. This means that they do not consider the costs of getting burglarized when thinking about the overall expense of a home security system. The only true way to determine the actual cost of an alarm system is to weigh the price of the actual system, the monthly monitoring and the installation costs with the expense of being burglarized.
When you install a home security system, you will pay for the equipment, which can vary depending on which company you choose and which components you have installed. Wireless systems are much cheaper than hardwired systems and much more convenient to install as well. Installation will push the price of the overall system up somewhat, but some home security system companies will waive this fee if you sign a monitoring contract with them. Monitoring can be as low as $30 per month, which averages out to about $1 per day. You really can’t find security of any kind for that cheap!
If you get burglarized, on the other hand, you will not only lose many of your most expensive possessions, but you will spend hours with the insurance company trying to settle on a fair compensation amount. You will always think your belongings are worth more than the insurance company does, which means you will need to fight for every penny. Then, you have to go out and buy new items to replace what was lost. You will be shocked to discover that many items are much more expensive now than they were when you first bought them. This is because technology advances so much that you might not even be able to find an identical replacement for those items.
Finally, you must consider the emotional costs a burglary exacts from you. You might be scared to stay in your house or you might have to deal with children’s nightmares for weeks or months on end. You will also have the stress of dealing with the insurance company and trying to figure out how to prevent another break in. When you think about all of the various financial and emotional losses that are racked up after a burglary, there is simply no question that installing a security system is the cheaper option.
