Vinyl Records Equal Rebellion

Anyone over a certain age remembers playing their favorite vinyl record repeatedly and their turntables. Dancing in your room and putting on those grandiose headphones so you would not upset your parents. Or perhaps you where the rebellious kind of teen and listened without the headphones just to bother your mom and dad.

Every generation has their favorite band or singer to play on repeat. Those over a certain age prefer the sounds of Frank Sinatra over those of MC5. Frank Sinatra vinyl albums in one time were something that was used to rebel against the authorities and your parents. Of course back then martinis were the drink before supper and shouting might have come a bit easier.

Then there is the one who invented the ultimate true rebellion against the establishment, Johnny Cash. Who doesn’t love to listen to a vinyl record of Johnny singing about rebelling against the world and beliefs? Whether you are hearing Johnny for the first time or have been listening to him for over thirty years, all ages love Johnny. His admiration for god and hate for government made Johnny the vital rebel.

Anyone who is over a particular age remembers their record collection fondly, including everything from Abba to Frank Zappa. You couldn’t wait to open your new vinyl record and read all the lyrics to the new Rick Springfield LP. There aren’t any more liner notes waiting to be studied these days.

The modern day advancements of listening devices have taken with them the intimacy of the music. Even if it is some great rebellious song about teen angst, playing it out loud on some tiny speakers hooked up to an even smaller device doesn’t have the same feeling as dropping a needle on the black road to freedom of a vinyl record.

No matter what the sound, it is comforting to know that there is still a sound out there for everyone. Even if there is not the same kind of rebellion being played aloud, it is still found there in music; you just might have to look harder for it these days. You won’t find the rawness of Iggy Pop these days with the brass lyrics of “I’m sick of you, sick of your mom and sick of your dad” in a Bieber song.

Remember there is always those old Beatles vinyl albums waiting to be discovered by another youth searching for a home. Or see if your kids recognize a Johnny Cash tune that has been covered by some less-than new guy. You can also get a vinyl record of your kid’s favorite artist and see if they know what to do with it. But be sure you get the turntable to go with it for the full appreciation.
