If you are traveling to Austin for a convention in the near future, why not turn a business trip into an opportunity for a mini vacation. If you have a family, consider bringing them along. Austin offers some great hotels and if you are looking for great hotels, there are many choices. Whatever the case, Austin is an exciting city that offers so many things to do. Here are a few suggestions:

Tour the State Capitol

Austin is the capital of Texas, and the historical value of touring the capitol building, by itself, makes it worth the trip. The beautiful building that stands as the capitol today was completed in 1888 and cost more than $3.7 million to build even back then. The building underwent changes over the years but was restored to its original appearance in the 1990s. As the seat of the government of Texas the capitol contains the House of Representative and Senate Chambers; the Supreme Court; a library containing legislative documents; an agricultural museum; life-sized statues of famous Texans, and many more historical artifacts. Guided tours are available every day except for major holidays.

Visit the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum

Three floors of exciting interactive exhibits, and an IMAX theater make learning the history of Texas not only interesting, but a lot of fun for the entire family. Each floor covers a different time period and offers exhibits, with artifacts, recreated environments, and various media programs such as audio narrations and videos. These exhibits tell the story of Texas from the days of native Americans and European explorers to more modern day sports and music legends of Texas. Special exhibits, events and a wide variety of concerts are offered regularly throughout the year.

Experience the Music of Austin

There's a reason why Austin is called the "Live Music Capital of the World". With two hundred live music venues and nearly 2,000 musicians living in Austin, there is no shortage of entertainment in this city. Although Austin's 6th street has been a famous entertainment district since the 1970s with its many bars and nightclubs, there are a number of other districts which are notable for great live music, such as Market district, Red River, University of Texas and Downtown Austin. There are musical festivals galore in Austin and South by Southwest (SXSW), a music and film festival is probably the best of Austin conventions, along with Austin City Limits Music Festival. Tours of Austin City Limit's studio 6A are available every Friday morning at 10:30.

For those attending Austin Conventions, consider staying a little longer to see all the excitement Austin has to offer. You can find Austin lodging with restaurant close to the Convention Center or in many other desirable locations.
