Did you know that approximately seventy percent of human knowledge is recorded in English language? Even if you did, you may want to contest the precision of the number. Well, agreed! There is practically no way by which the number can be proved, but the fact remains that English is the language of the world. It is the language in which commerce around the world is carried out, international agreements are made, and business meetings are conducted. It is also the only language that you can easily access and learn wherever you may live, and that includes the learning resources in the English language on satellite TV.

At least a half of the global population use English in one form or the other, and there are rich varieties of them around. So it is now common to hear academicians speaking about British English, Australian English, and American English, and so on. In fact there is no other language that has some much variety to it. Most native English speaking countries insist upon migrants learning English before they become acceptable and are allowed to take up a profession in their country. There are many nuances to English which are peculiar to it and therefore the best way to learn it is to hear and speak in that language as often as one can.

English, as I said has its own peculiarities when it comes to pronunciation and speaking it fluently, and the best way therefore is to live in a country where it is a native language.

Accent and style are something that should be reserved for another day as the learner matures into speaking it fluently. By living in an English speaking country, you get the opportunity to use the language most often, without your native influence, which is very important to mastering it. There are many families in the US, UK, Australia who accept individuals for home stay, and is one of the best ways to master the English language. So try to find one and stay with them for at least a year, and speak to their family members as often as you can.

If for some reason traveling to a native English speaking country is not practical or the expenses that you foresee are too high, the English language TV channels are next better for you. Spend two or more hours before the TV hearing native speakers speak English. You will often see English words being pronounced differently in different channels. Don't feel confused, that is the richness and flexibility of the language which you need to appreciate.

Reading is just as important as hearing others speak English, and will help you enrich your vocabulary, and will also help you to spell words properly. To begin with, make it a point to read English newspapers, magazines and journals. There is really no dearth to the varieties you will find on the newsstands and book stores. If you are new to English altogether, or you have just begun and would like to sharpen your language skill, then begin with the newspaper. And when you begin reading, remember to keep a pencil or pen handy. Underline each word or sentence that you don't understand, and refer them with your dictionary. In the beginning this kind of an approach may seem a little tedious and frustrating, but in the long run they will certainly bring success to you.

Speaking is a different kind of nut to crack. Record your speeches on your computer and try comparing them with native pronunciation, and make corrections. Hearing your own voice will help you do things the right way. To master English, learn a lot of idioms, idiomatic expressions; the English language is full of it, and without it, speaking can be little a difficult remember.
