The Board Game on Big Screen – Battleship

In 1931, Milton Bradley Company came up with this pad-and-pencil game known as Broadsides, the Game of Naval Strategy. This guessing game meant for two players became extremely popular in those times. Then, in 1967 it was introduced as a board game. Now in 2012 Peter Berg took up the challenge of crafting a film that is based on this popular game.

Many would think that they this is a crazy idea, as the game has no characters or plot that could shape up the film. But Peter has indeed made this film that has a plot; I must say a clever one. When you watch Battleship you would come to know that this one’s got unlimited supply of ammunitions to blast off the incoming threat. Let’s talk about the plot of this film; a routine exercise happening between American and Japanese sailors is disrupted by huge alien spaceships. Three ships participated in the exercise but one of them gets in the middle of the force field and left stranded. Battleship gets ready as soon as they witness the alien ship and starts to fire, little do they know that they are dealing something extremely lethal and one cannot mess with it. The navy gets all charged and starts to mess around with the aliens. The war, they are getting into is filled with dangerous twists and as the alien beings are armed to teeth. Alex Cooper who is the protagonist of the film is known for short temperedness. He is been given the responsibility of taking care of the incoming threat. His life becomes all the more troublesome when he has a fair deal of heated conversations with Admiral Crane portrayed by Liam Neeson. Crane is also the father of Samantha who is Alex’s fiancé. She is a physical therapist and has her sweet role to play in the film that makes it all the more interesting.

Back in the shore, she joins hands with a disabled war veteran and communications geek. Their mission is to stop the aliens from sending any messages to their home. If the aliens manage to send any signals that would mean the destruction of planet earth. The action sequences in the film are phenomenal and needless to say the crew has done a great work in creating a film that is based on a board game.
