School Uniform Has Its Own Dignity
Author: | Posted: 17.02.2012Schools are known to be the temple of learning. We consider schools the ultimate source to impart knowledge through the medium of education. However, when we think of a school, most of us imagine school premises with many students in school uniform. Therefore, it can be said that, uniform is not just an attire, but plays a vital role in the school and in the life if students. Let us dig out facts why it is considered to be vital.
The history of School uniforms dates back to 16th century during the reign of King Henry VIII when England first introduced uniforms for the students in schools. The school uniforms then were called as "bluecoats", as they consisted of long trench-coat-style jackets dyed in blue color. But, the uniforms were not for the elite class of students; this was a mark of distinction between the poor classes of children attending the charity schools from other class of children. After 300 years, elite students who attended better English public schools also began wearing uniforms. Slowly, it became mandatory in all the schools to wear uniforms. It also became a way to keep social and cultural control over the students in schools.
However, the history of uniform has changed. In the present times, good schools are known for their better uniforms and in many charity schools, uniforms are not mandatory for the poor children. These days, one of the vital things that a school gets identified, is by the color of its uniform. It has been found that many students find their school uniform the best outfit they. School uniforms establish a sense of unity among the students. School uniforms were introduced in the schools with a motive to treat all the students equally. In a school, there are students of different backgrounds. School uniforms do not allow them to differentiate among themselves. This also helps to keep the students away from fashion, at least in the schools. School uniforms also keep violence among students away. This even does not let the teachers discriminate students. One of the things that students take most care of is their school uniforms.
In a multi-cultural country like India, wearing uniforms properly in schools is quite very necessary because it is the land of many cultures; therefore, if students come in their traditional dresses then the classrooms will look more like carnival than a study centre. School uniforms helps to bring the sense of oneness among the students, despite of different castes, creeds, religions and genders. The motive behind introducing uniforms in the schools and even making it compulsory was not only to make a distinction between a school from the others at a single fleeting look, but also to improve and encourage the students to make healthy relations with others and between various groups of students. Thus, just asking the students to wear uniforms in the school would be a waste until and unless they are made understand why to wear it. In this way, we can conclude with the use and necessity of uniform in the schools.
