In 1776, Congress came up with the Declaration of Independence. That iconic piece of paper, safely tucked away today in the National Archives, speaks of more than just telling the British that they cannot order Americans around anymore. It also speaks of the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

It has been dubbed the American Dream, the right of every American to a better life and the chance to make that possible. However, given the volatile state of the economy today, many wonder whether or not the American Dream is still attainable. Well, is it?

For that, here is a deeper look at the meaning of the American Dream, or at least how historian James T. Adams defined it. In his 1931 book, The Epic of America, he said that there is a dream of a land in which life should be better for all. However, this is where it gets really interesting: “It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages, but a dream of social order…”

With homes and cars being affected by the shaky economy, a lot of people think that the American Dream is dead. However, this current situation only tells Americans to work harder for their dreams to come true. Homes may grow more expensive, but the real reward is getting one and calling it your own.

To be honest, there is no certainty that prices and interest rates will remain high or low forever.
