With the invention of new products, came the necessity to store them in a compact and easy to access method. This necessity gave rise to rack systems which help store increased number of articles arranged in a methodical manner.

Rack systems are made of different materials like plastic, wood, steel and aluminum mainly. Small rack systems are made from plastic which are colorful, elegant to look at. These are meant for lighter use for using small items. Wooden racks come in all sizes shapes and serve different purposes. Wooden racks are provided with doors made of either wood or glass. They are also given elegant and luxurious touch with carvings and decorations. They are sturdy and are moveable, but they have the problem of termites and insects. There are aluminum racks which are light, economical and easy to maintain. These can be assembled and disassembled and they can be fabricated to any length and width. Steel racks are the most used ones which are sturdy, long lasting and can be fabricated to any size.

Steel racks generally consist of an L angle with grooves to fit the plates. The plate can be fitted at any required spacing and the plate size also varies greatly. These are the industrial racking system which is most common and widely used. Rack systems are also an essential part of the modern day malls and super bazaars. They are also used in residences to save space. When the horizontal space gets exhausted, vertical space is used for storing using the racks. Pallet Rack systems are also used in transporting materials to avoid skidding and slipping of materials during transportation. This is put to best use in the transportation of vehicles.

The invention of rack systems and industrial racking has helped in better storage and better display methods both commercially as well as residentially.
