Prepare Your Household for an Emergency

An emergency by definition is a situation for which preparedness is not possible. You simply cannot know when an emergency is going to occur because if you did, you would do everything you could to avoid it. This is essentially the concept behind preparing for an emergency. You take all the precautions you can to prevent one from occurring, but you also take steps to respond to one if it does happen.

First of all, get a home security system installed in your house. You might be wondering what this has to do with preventing an emergency. While it can’t prevent a medical emergency or an accident such as a fall, it can prevent a home invasion or burglary, both of which would be categorized as an emergency. A home security system is a powerful deterrent to would-be criminals, since their objective is to get in and out as quickly as possible without being detected. An alarm system will guarantee that they will be detected.

In addition, a home security system should definitely be part of a plan to respond to an emergency. At the push of a button, you can get emergency personnel to your home more quickly than if you place a 911 call. This is because the monitoring company linked to your security system will have all of your information come up on the computer screen as soon as your alarm goes off. They have a direct line to emergency services and will get them to your home within minutes.

In addition to installing a home security system, you should also perform the following tasks to ensure that you either avoid an emergency or respond appropriately in case of emergency.

• Walk your property and identify any safety hazards. Take steps to eliminate them.

• Always wear a seatbelt when you are in a moving vehicle.

• Do not drink and drive. Ever. Period.

• When riding a bicycle or motorcycle, always wear a helmet and dress in appropriate padding or clothing.

• When participating in sports, wear the recommended safety equipment at all times.

• Create a family security plan so that everyone in your household knows what to do in the event of an emergency. Practice role-playing in certain scenarios and repeat them again and again, especially if you have young children.

You can’t keep an emergency from happening entirely; however, you can lower the chances of having one by keeping this information in mind. No one likes to think about having an emergency, but when one occurs and your actions make it less impactful, you will be glad you did.
