Indian railways attempted to modernize the system of booking the tickets by offering an online service in order to make the process of reservation convenient and smoother for the travelers. Despite various reservation counters available in every part of India, Indian Railway Network introduced this bold feature. On 3rd August 2002, the system of online reservation was launched in collaboration with the Centre for Railway Information Systems. Earlier, people used to stand in long queues before the counters at the reservation centers, but online ticket booking has made things easier to a great extent. One can simply log on to IRCTC Indian railways reservation website that allows you check the availability of tickets and your PNR status or seek out for the appropriate train and variations of fare in different accommodation classes of the tickets. You can also go through all the necessary information like train number, category of coaches, accessibility of the train tickets and fare for every class. One has to create an account on the IRCTC website. Once account is created you can login and get your rail reservation. Select your travel date, source and destination station name or code, class (Sleeper/ second sitting/ Ac Chair car/ AC 3 tier/ AC 2 tier/ first class/ First class AC) and ticket type.
Online Indian railways reservation offer two types of tickets one is I-ticket and the other is e-ticket. I- ticket is like normal ticket which will be delivered at your doorstep in 2-3 days of Time. For I-Tickets you have to book the ticket at least two days in advance. I-Tickets can be issued for Waiting List, Confirmed and RAC cases. Where as an e-ticket can be booked up to the time of chart preparation for your train. To book an e-ticket you have to carry your ID proof details like PAN Card, ID card, Passport, Ration Card, Central/State Government etc as an identity proof and just have to carry the print out of your electronic reservation slip as your rail reservation. You can make payment by your credit card, debit card or by internet banking facility in your bank account.
