Medical Laboratory Technology is also termed as Clinical Laboratory Technology. The technicians working in this domain collect and analyze body fluids and even tissues, helping in the detection, prevention and treatment of various diseases. It is an exhaustive profession covering routine tests like blood component detection to major tests like malignant/ benign tissue examinations. The technologists perform various kinds of tasks. Like, the chemical technologists analyze the hormonal and chemical levels and composition of the body fluids such as blood, urine, saliva, semen etc. Similarly, the Microbiologists identify the presence of microbes such as bacteria, fungi, yeast etc in a specimen. Molecular biologists manage very complex tests involving proteins, nucleic acids etc.

Prerequisite to become a Medical Laboratory Technician

A person aspiring to land into Medical Laboratory Technology must understand that he would be required to handle infectious samples so observance of good personal hygiene is must. He/ She must follow Good Lab Practices. The final analysis of the test decides the course of treatment for a particular disease, therefore precision as well as accuracy is a necessity. Lastly not to forget, the technician must be qualified from a recognized university.

Education qualification and training

There are diploma and degree level courses available for Medical Laboratory Technology. For a degree course, one must be a science graduate and for a diploma course, the minimum requirement is higher secondary education. The diploma could be of two or three years. There are innumerable hospitals, clinics and institutes in India and abroad offering training courses but one must always be very careful while selecting a good institute, having experienced and trained faculty, state of the art lab infrastructure, and most importantly, it should be accredited from a recognized university.
