Make moving easier

Moving house is stressful enough without having to worry about all your furniture making it to your new home in one piece. Many people hire professional moving companies, especially if they have acquired a lot of possessions or have some particularly large pieces of furniture, but this is no guarantee that everything is going to go smoothly. There are, however, a few things that home-owners can do to make the move go smoothly and to give their furniture a good chance of arriving safely at its destination.

The first thing you should do is to check if any of your large pieces of furniture have detachable pieces or, even better, can actually be disassembled and reassembled at the other end. You may see this as creating extra work, but it is much better to spend a few hours with a screwdriver than watch movers struggle to get your beautiful and expensive bed or dresser down a narrow staircase without it getting a nasty bump!

Picking the right moving company can be tricky, especially if you haven't moved before. Ask for recommendations from friends and family and check online reviews for positive and negative comments. Always meet the movers face-to-face before signing up with them and have them come to your home so they can see the size of the job.

Labelling is very important when moving, not just for boxes to identify which rooms they need to go in, but furniture too. It may seem obvious to you that a certain chest of drawers belong in the nursery, but movers cannot be expected to know that. If any items have already been damaged, make sure the movers know about it, especially if it might affect the way the piece is stored or transported.

Some people trust their movers so much, they are happy to leave them to it while they work or have a day out with the family. It is a much better idea to stay in the old house, monitoring what the movers are doing and answering any questions they have, before making your way to your new home to supervise the unpacking. That way, you can stop any mistakes before they happen and won't come home to a disaster zone on you first night in the new house.
