There are numerous trains including luxury trains, Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani Express, Duronto Expess and many regional express trains. Rajdhani express is most popular and also connects all the major cities.

In India, train booking is done through IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited). The website for reservation is irctc.co.in. You can choose the class – AC First Class (1A), AC 2nd Class (2A), AC 3rd Class (3A), AC three tier (Economy) (3E), Sleeper Class (SL), AC Chair Car (CC), Seater Class (2S) and Unreserved Class (UR). After choosing the class, fare will be shown accordingly. After clicking ob booking, you will be shifted to payment gateway where you can choose method of payment. There are multiple methods like credit cards, debit cards, net banking, cash cards etc. You will be provided with e-ticket on your email. You can take out print out of the ticket. Alternatively, a message is also sent by irctc to your mobile number confirming booking. You can use message or similar electronic format (ipad, laptop etc) as proof of ticket if you do not wish to take print out. You should take a note of PNR number and transaction id for future references.

During the peak season, tickets are always booked. This is especially true in case of Rajdhani which is usually the first to get full. In such cases, person can still book and his name will be in the RAC or waiting list. There are few specific tickets which provide seating facility only. This is known as Reservation against Cancellation. This allows passenger to board train and travel. If confirmed ticket of others gets cancelled, a person having reservation against cancellation can get confirmed ticket.

In such cases, person can still book and his name will be in the waiting list. If cancellation takes place, your waiting list improves and possibility of getting a confirmed reservation improves. Tickets getting cancelled are common occurrence and if waiting list is short, there are good chances that you can get ticket. However one is not allowed to travel in waiting list status.

The last option is to get tatkal tickets which can be booked only within 2 days of travelling. The tatkal tickets are a bit expensive than regular tickets but very beneficial for those who are unable to get tickets and have to travel due to urgent business.
