Rail booking and any related enquired in India is managed by IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited). The website for enquiries and reservation is irctc.co.in. When you visit this website, you can find a lot of information apart from making your bookings. You can search for trains along different routes. You need to fill in some particulars like source and destination location to get started. You can also decide the class in which you prefer to travel – AC First Class (1A), AC 2nd Class (2A), AC 3rd Class (3A), AC three tier (Economy) (3E), Sleeper Class (SL), AC Chair Car (CC), Seater Class (2S) and Unreserved Class (UR). After filling in the particulars, a list of trains will be shown. You can select any one of them and fare will be shown accordingly. After clicking on book online, you will be transferred to payment portal where you can choose method of payment. There are numerous methods like credit cards, debit cards, net banking, cash cards etc.
Before you make the payment, it will be asked whether you require iticket or eticket. In case of iticket, booking has to be made early as the tickets will be delivered to the shipping address. In case of eticket, booking can be made at the last moment and you can take its print out as proof of booking. You can also use message (SMS) sent by IRCTC or electronic format (ipad, palmtop, laptop etc) as proof of ticket if you do not prefer to carry the print out. These along with any ID papers will be required by TTE at time of boarding or during your journey.
