Typewriter was one of the most efficient, stable and useful of inventions. It was the blue-eyed buy of every office. However, the dawn of the era was sounded by the advent of computers in the 1990s. There was the time when IBM sold its typewriter unit and by 2011 the last of companies to manufacture it also shut shop. Even though the typewriter has not undergone any drastic change in the century-old reign, the IBM typewriter rolled out many modified versions. IBM is one of the leaders in the field of typewriter manufacturing and also a trusted name that created a niche for itself.

One of the typewriters that clicked instantly was the selectric. The USP of it was speed, as, till date, most of the typewriters when used were producing print on the page far too slowly. The speed of the selectric is to hit more than 15 characters per second. The technology used in ibm selectric was that of ‘Golf ball’. What happens in the selectric is that the ‘golf ball’ rotated and swiveled to the right spot before hitting. Moreover, it was more reliable, versatile and also producing high quality prints. All this coupled with the speed factor made it a winner in the market.

The IBM Selectric is also laden with several features when compared with other typewriters. One such feature is that fact that if two keys are hit together, the first one and the second one will both appear within a span of seconds. The selectric is often confused with electric, but due to its various factures, it has become a popular name in every office and held its space on every desk. No wonder that it was a hit and in fact the selectric will be celebrating its 51 years of existence soon.
