Before becoming an experienced New York based actor in the sea of professionals already making their way, you must first take action to build your talent and skills. Nowadays with all of the loaded competition, especially when trying to make a name for yourself in the Big Apple, if you aren’t a triple threat (actor, dancer, singer) you may as well throw in the towel right now.

Unless you have found a serious niche that you are truly mastering such as accents, stunt work, voice over, or improvisation, you won’t have a chance at the big leagues. If after hearing all of this you are still bound and determined to go full force to train as a New York actor, then more power to you! You may very well indeed have that Rachel Berry spark to make your way onto Broadway (or film, or voice over, wherever your dreams are headed.

Getting your foot in the door requires an unlimited supply of passion, guts, and pure unadulterated determination and hard work. Stay positive, and every time you hear the word “no” just let it roll off and keep pushing forward. Having a support system of close friends and family on your side who are all rooting for you will help you more than you know, especially during times when you get frustrated and are on the verge of giving up (it happens to just about everyone, no matter how tough you think you are).

If you are not moving to New York to attend a specific school and are just flying by the seat of your pants, the best thing to do is get a part time job & get yourself into as many acting and dance classes as possible. Then, once you feel ready and prepared, start going out on auditions.

Getting an agent is a crucial part of the process if you are serious about having and maintaining a strong acting career. An agent can not only get you auditions, but also connect you with casting directors, acting schools, and exclusive workshops put on at their agency by casting directors. Agents can get you into auditions that are not available to the public, so having a good one can accelerate your journey to stardom. An agency wants you to succeed, because if you make money, so do they.

It is also a good idea to do your own job search on the internet, make an IMDb (if you do not know what this is, you should, so look it up ASAP), create your own youtube channel with good quality reels showcasing your talents, and also create your own website so that casting directors and producers can get a further sense of who you are, what your background is, and it shows how serious you are as an actor. Putting your resume out there into as many internet databases as possible is the best thing. The more presence you have in cyberspace the more likely you are to “get seen” and hit the “big time.”
