Stuffy and blocked nose is a common problem that happens to a lot of people during winters, and it is even more common in the case of kids. Usually when someone catches cold and has fever alongside, then this problem tends to become worse. A stuffed nose could be an individual problem that can get sorted quickly in a few days' time, or it could be a problem in combination with other things, such as sinus, any kind of pulmonary diseases, high viral fever, chest infection etc. Depending on how serious the problem is, and the kind of symptoms shown in the patient, the doctor advises some allopathic medicines. However, at the same time, a patient can also try some home remedies that can help ease the discomfort and solve the problem quickly.

Sniffing an onion is probably one of the oldest tricks in Grandma's books when it comes to stuffed nose. Most of the de-congesting sprays and inhalers that are available in the market have some elements that help in reducing the blockage of the nose by irritating the infection and making the nose runny. Smelling a raw onion does the same trick, except that de-congesting sprays will also have menthol in it at times.

Next, it is advisable to eat foods which are slightly more hot and spicy than your usual meals. That again helps to make the nose runny and cures the congestion. Make sure that during the time you have cold, you do not consume a lot of cold foods and liquids. Try avoiding ice creams and cold beverages etc.

Chicken soup made at home, and other hot drinks such as hot coco milk, tea, coffee etc. are very effective when it comes to a blocked nose. Chamomile tea and other herbal teas are specifically very good for reducing cold and curing a stuffed nose.

Taking steam also is a very good thing. You necessarily do not need to have a steamer for that. Simply boiling water in a large utensil and bending your head over it will do the needful. While bending, just make sure that you cover your head with a towel so that the steam directly reaches you face. When bathing, make sure that you do not bathe from cold water and are showering only in hot water for a few days. After the shower, enter in a heated room, and not immediately in a cold room. Subjecting your body to immediate temperature changes can also be a cause for cold.

Avoid sitting in air conditioned environments as much as possible. That too can cause more damage to your condition.

Among other things, do not be lazy during the time you have a stuffed nose. The more you lie in the bed, the more you are giving your nose and chest the opportunities to clog and block more. Exercise regularly and try to being in your daily regular schedule as much as possible. Following these simple steps will soon help you to get rid of your blocked nose.
