Great Fun and Thrills at Salou

Salou may not be very well known by the outside world but it flourishes as a popular family vacation resort at Costa Dorada which is only 50 miles away from Barcelona.

Biggest attraction

Salou’s biggest attraction is its sandy Playa Levante which boasts of calm shallow waters in a well maintained environment. Hence, this beach resort is popular with families having children. The beach also provides great facilities like sun beds, water sports shops, lifeguards, first aid post and snack bars.

Salou offers many good beaches with great resort facilities; there are some pretty ones which overlook the cliffs to give a different feel and landscape. There is a bountiful choice of water sports at the marina for one’s enjoyment; this includes scuba diving, windsurfing, water-skiing, kayaking and jet-skiing.

There is a lovely esplanade at the sea front which has beautifully landscaped gardens lined with palm trees and colorful flower beds. One end of this promenade stands the Font Lluminosa; a Carles Buida design. Night time is the best viewing time of this spectacularly beautiful fountain with the colored lights and water show.

Landmarks

A 16th century Torre Vella watchtower is a great Salou landmark which protected the coast from pirate attacks. There is a municipal museum which showcases art exhibitions regularly with the tower’s gardens sporting the famous Adoma Puig’s three maidens sculpture.

The rural heritage is another landmark of Salou that would be attractive to the tourists as with modern Catalan farmhouse. There are many exhibits inside which showcase the farming methods evolved throughout the centuries.

The Old Customs House and the Harbor Master’s Office are notable 19th century buildings of impressive architecture that have impacted the town’s past maritime. The Santa Maria del Mar was a 1766 church which was frequently used by sailors that houses many contemporary baptistery decorations by Josep Grau Garriga.

Entertainment

Younger visitors to Salou would enjoy the Port Aventura theme park which is the best in Europe. The Dragon Khan rollercoaster and the Grand Canyon Rapids ride would raise the adrenalin levels of their riders. There are gentler rides for smaller children.

This theme park offers the best of 5 worlds; namely, Far West, Mexico, Mediterranean, China and Polynesia. There is also the Costa Caribe water park and funfair with many traditional fairground rides to thrill the young ones. There is no lack of fun and entertainment in Salou for the young and old.
