Garage Door Security

It is critical to examine your garage door and its capabilities so that you can correct any security concerns you have. The reason why you need to replace your garage door if it is more than ten years old is because at that time, the manufacturers of garage doors only used about twelve frequency combinations for the remote controls that open and close the doors. What this means is that if a criminal has a remote that is made by the same company as your garage door and opener, he will have approximately a one in twelve chance to open your garage door. Fortunately, this can be corrected.
The best way to correct this problem is to purchase a new garage door that uses a rolling frequency combination. This means that your garage door will never have the same combination twice in a row. This makes it nearly impossible for someone to own the same garage door as you do that operates on the same frequency as yours is currently on. If you can’t afford to change your garage door, there is a way for you to change your frequency combination manually.
First, take off the cover of your remote control opener and you will see between ten and twelve switches. If you have an older opener, you might see looped wires instead of switches. These switches determine the combination that opens and closes your door. If you see that just one switch is out of position of the other switches, you know that a burglar with a remote control made by the same company has a one in ten or twelve chance of opening your door. Usually, the more switches that are out of position from the other switches, the more secure your garage door is.
You can simply change the combination by taking a small screwdriver and moving one or two switches to the opposite position from where it currently is. Be sure to write down the new combination. Now, make sure that your door is unplugged and climb up to take the cover off the receiver. This is where you will locate a second set of switches. Move these switches to match the ones in your remote. Be sure to change all remotes that your family uses.
No home security is 100% effective, but if you ensure that your garage door is secure, you will make it more effective than it is right now.
