Used as a symbol, signaling device or at times for decoration, the flag, which is traditionally a rectangular-shaped piece of fabric, has been an important object to the civilized mankind for over 3000 years.

Uses of Flags:

Flags have persistently been used as a symbol of unity of a group; which may include a tribe, an association, a community, a political group, a nation etc. Flags have also constantly played the important role as a symbol of support for groups in competitions; from sports to elections.

Moreover, Flags have constantly been used in the field of signaling and communication; ranging from railway and airway signals to signals of caution to the new flag semaphore system.

Flags find usage in decoration too and in recent day’s commercial use of flags can be seen in various places starting from being used at conference tables to promoting brands in events.

Materials Used for Flags:

Flags are typically made from nylons and polyesters. Polyesters include:

• 100D polyester, which is inexpensive and finds usage in promo giveaways and other special events.

• 200D Knitted polyester is a more durable and stronger material for flag making and is used in making Flags which fly outdoors in low-speed wind regions

• The 500D Spun polyester is better for flying flags in higher wind speeds and also for daily use.

Flags and Commerce:

The cost of a flag varies with the size and the material used and also on the designs done on it. Nylon fiber is more expensive than the polyester while among polyesters 100D is the most economical.

Even flagpoles vary in costs owing to their heights and designs with flagpoles consisting of multiple pieces being generally costlier than the single piece ones.

Some important commercial flag making companies include Annan & Company, C.F. Flag and Valley Forge Flags; while The Flag Pole Co. and Flag Store USA are notable flagpole manufacturers.
