Five Important Tips for Buying a Used Car Online
Author: IsaacLindsay | Posted: 16.07.2012Buying a used car online is both amazingly easy, and somewhat risky. The good news is, car shoppers no longer have to endure harrowing trips to used car lots. There are still some important things to keep in mind in order to get the best deal online for a used car. Here are five important tips for helping you to succeed.
Unleash the power of email and Internet research. If you find an interesting listing, say on Craigslist, your immediate response should be to email the seller and ask to see the vehicle in person. The response (or lack thereof) is your first clue to the trustworthiness of the seller. If you smell anything fishy in the response, avoid the deal. Make your first moves using email, text, or phone, and only then should you schedule an appointment to see the car yourself. The same principle goes for shopping on EBay. Find sellers with high ratings and good customer satisfaction.
Stay close to home. Although you can conveniently purchase a used car online, you’ll have to eventually go physically to get the car. Chances are, you can find a good car that is within a reasonable distance from where you live. This is important, because you’ll want to look at the car in person before you pony up the cash and drive off. Look for deals that are within at least a fifty-mile radius of where you live. Making a close-to-home purchase reduces risk, minimizes hassle, and improves your chances of making a great purchase.
Use caution when making payments. If you are purchasing a used car from an individual, on Craigslist for example, insist on paying cash in person. When using a reputable used car site such as eBay Motors, use your credit card. Credit cards can help protect against fraudulent sellers.
Verify the price of the car. Once you find a car that you’re interested in, see if the asking price is right. Simply go to a website such as Edmunds.com or kbb.com, enter in the vehicle details, and find out the valued price. A price check is one of your early clues as to whether or not you should purchase the car.
Purchase a VIN check. The VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, is a powerful weapon in negotiating a price, discovering the history of the vehicle, and determining the wisdom of a potential purchase. If the seller does not provide the VIN, ask for it, or simply look at the vehicle and write it down. You can find most vehicle VINs at the bottom of the front driver’s side windshield or the inside of the driver’s door.
Buying a used car online is a smart move. It does, however, come with some risks. As long as you are practicing good sense and following a few solid points of advice, you can make a satisfying used car purchase.
