You want your family to be able to relax when they are at home, knowing that you have done everything possible to keep them protected from the threat of burglary and home invasion.
If home security is a priority for you, it is likely that you have already installed a home security system that includes remote monitoring so even when you can’t keep an eye on your home and family yourself, you know that they are still protected. This is probably the best step you can take in terms of keeping your family and home safe. However, there are many physical changes you can make to the perimeter of your home to make it less inviting to would-be criminals. One of the best changes you can make is to put up fences and gates.
Of course, any criminal intent on getting into your home will not allow a fence or a gate to get in his way, but the majority of perpetrators would rather choose an easier target than take a risk on one that has more layers of protection. Here are some tips on what kind of fences and gates to install that will make your home less of a target.
First, your fence should be at least six-feet high. Low fences add a certain aesthetic factor to the property, but in terms of security, they are worthless. They can be easily climbed or even stepped over to get onto your property, which defeats the entire purpose of a security fence. Now, six-foot wooden fences are fine for the backyard, but most people don’t want this kind of fence to block their front yard and the beauty of their home. In this case, a metal fence with a decorative gate would be a better option. Not only are these attractive, but they are extremely secure as well, since they can be locked electronically or remotely.
There are other options for fences as well, including those that are charged with electricity and those that are topped with razor or barbed wire. Before you install these kinds of fences, though, be sure to check with your local authorities to ensure they are legal.
Gates and fences are an excellent way to add an additional layer of protection as part of a comprehensive home security system. They don’t have to be ugly, either. You can find a style that complements your home’s exterior and makes your family and property safer as well.
