Today, breast augmentation has gained a lot of popularity as an effective cosmetic surgery that can

improve the appearance of the breasts ensuring a more attractive body contour. Before one opts for this

breast implant surgery, there are a few things to know about breast augmentation as it will help you

take an informed decision.

• Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty and is usually done using surgical

implants. Breast implants are mainly bags of saline or silicone gel. For augmentation these are

implanted by the cosmetic surgeons above the breast muscle or the breast tissue. Silicone implants look

and feel more natural compared to saline implants.

• Women usually opt for breast augmentation when they are not satisfied with the shape or size of the

breasts, to balance disproportionate breasts, or to add more volume to breasts that have lost volume

following weight loss, pregnancy, age, breast feeding or other factors.

• Breast enlargement can also be done as a reconstructive procedure for women who have had a mastectomy.

• Breast implants are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, their sizes range from 100cc to 400

cc. The shapes available are round and tear-drop. Another option is implant with a rough (textured) or

smooth surface.

• Implants are sometimes associated with complications such as capsular contracture and rupturing. It is

difficult to notice the rupture in silicone implants because the shape and size of the breast remains

unchanged for a long time. Rupturing is more easily noticed in saline implants. This is because the body

absorbs the fluid that leaks out, causing reduction in breast size. Infection, bleeding, fluid

accumulation, pain, scarring and short-term/permanent changes in breast or nipple sensation are other

possible complications.

• A more natural way of breast augmentation is by stem cell transfer. In this the patient’s own fat is

used instead of implants. Excess fat present in the thighs or stomach is taken and a portion of it is

processed to extract the stem cells. It is then mixed with the remaining fat tissue and injected into

the breasts. In this procedure there is no risk of foreign materials being introduced into the body.
