Area And Accessibility

Named after the great pianist and composer, the Budapest Franz Liszt International Airport handles approximately 8.2 million passengers a year, and with an area of 15 square kilometres is Hungary’s largest airport. The airport has been in operation since 1950 and is located 16 kilometres from the city of Budapest off Üllői Avenue. The three terminals have 45 passenger airlines operating flights to most European and Middle Eastern destinations. New terminal buildings and improved efficiency are expected to enable the airport to handle 15 million passengers in a year.

Getting Around the Airport

Budapest Airport has three terminals, 1, 2A and 2B. Terminal 1 is the oldest terminal and after being restored in 2005 was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra award for excellence in heritage preservation. Some distance away, Terminal 2A and 2B are interconnected and handle both Schengen and non-Schengen passengers. Terminal 1 is connected to the city by MÁV Start Zrt trains, while bus services ply between the city and terminals 2A and 2B. Inter-terminal airport shuttles ensure that the seven-kilometre distance between terminals is not a hindrance to the traveller.

Ownership And Development

Originally run by the state-owned Aviation and Airport Directorate, the airport now runs as a joint private and public enterprise. The airport has seen significant development since 2000 with the addition of the Lufthansa and Malév lounges. The new SkyCourt terminal has several restaurants, duty-free shops and Wi-Fi access. An outdoor aircraft museum is a few minutes walk from Terminal 2. Located a short distance away from the airport is a wide range of accommodation where any Budapest Airport hotel will offer complimentary transfers by car and minibus to the airport.
