Denia: a booming resort in la Costa Blanca

UK tourists seem to have chosen la Costa Blanca of Spain as their favorite holiday spot. Most people choose the beach resorts but many are starting to prefer the golf courses and the city of Denia can provide both kinds of entertainment with ease. It seems that many of them end up buying property and retiring in this beautiful area.

Denia is located at the foot of Mt Montgo on the slopes of which many villas have been constructed. Villas are also available to be rented.

Golf Courses

Located in the Marriot Hotel is the La Sella golf course, which offers 18 holes. Further along the road is the Oliva Nova Golf Course, designed by none other than Severino Ballesteros.

Beaches and Restaurants

More than 20 km of white sand beaches grace the coast of the city of Denia. Along the beach you can find all kinds of bars, cafes, chiringuitos and restaurants that compete with each other to promote the yummiest tapas, paellas, grilled fish and meats and the coldest beer and drinks. Souvenir shops and beach gear supply shops abound, as well as games arcades and cybercafés.

Open air cinemas where you can drive and watch a movie in the privacy and air con comfort of your own car, are very popular in the hot summer nights.

Ice creameries, slosh and Horxata

Denia´s many ice cream shops or heladerías present a great variety of scoops and cones. They also serve slosh or granizado, the most common being granizado de limon. One of the favourite drinks in this area is the Horchata de Chufa, a drink made from a very small root.

In the other side of the port we can find the shopping area of Denia. The most well known shopping street is the promenade of el Marques del Campo, leading to a large square. Many local fiestas are held in this area.

The Castle of Denia

Denia has a very ancient castle and fortress. Vestiges of Iberian settlements and Roman ruins can still be seen. The Moors built the castle as we see it now during the 11th and 12th centuries and made it very prosperous. The Christians conquered it back in the 14th century. It now holds the church of la Iglesia de la Asuncion and some museums. From the top of the castle one can see scenic views of the sea and the countryside around Denia.
