Churches in Alicante

Every year people from entire Europe visit Alicante province in Spain particularly for its historical monuments and sacred buildings like churches. There are many churches in Alicante with great historical backgrounds and this article will give you a brief guide-line about some of the landmark churches in Alicante. These churches reflect a true picture of Spanish architecture and art.

Concatedral de San Nicolas de Bari:

This church counts among the oldest churches in Alicante and it is situated in the famous Old Town of they city. This church was constructed during the 17th century and the church was built on the remained structure of the mosque. The front of this church is very simple without any ornaments and depicts a style of baroque while the inner part of the church is spacious and big and the dome of the church is well decorated and it lies forty-five meters above from the floor. The unity chapel of the church is among the good example of Spanish art.

La Iglesia de Santa Maria:

The church is also called St Mary’s Church and this is the oldest church in Alicante as this church was built during 14th century to 16th century and this church too was constructed upon the remains of the main Moorish Mosque. Originally this church was constructed based on Gothic design but it was restyled in the later years. The outer look of the church is very solid and a lot of stone work is used in the construction of the church. The traditional use of ornament in Spanish style is also the significant part of the church. There are many sculpture of Gothic style with a history of 15th century present in the church. The church is located near the city hall in Plaza de Santa Maria Square.

Chapel of St Rocco:

This church was constructed in the year 1559 and it is located just close to chapel of Santa Cruz in Alicante. The church was rebuilt in the year 1875 and it has Stature of Gypsy Christ inside it. The church is present at San Roque Street, Alicante.

Chapel of Santa Cruz:

This church is small and located at Santa Cruz, Alicante. While hiking up Benacantil mount you will find this church which was constructed by the end of 18th century. The church is all white and built pleasantly in contrast to the adjacent streets which are narrow. This church is the first point to start the celebrations of Easter.
