According to the Standards Act Child Support (CSSA), noncustodial parent generally pays for the support, maintenance and education of children. Some payments such as gifts, clothing, transportation, rental costs as well as child benefit cannot be considered ‘Child support.’ In addition, the conservation status of parents in Suffolk is not obliged to give explanations on payments child support.

CCSA provides an option to the court has not to follow the instructions, if it determines that it would be unfair under certain circumstances. Court rarely uses its discretion to depart from the guidelines.

The child's parents can opt out of the Standards Act, child support, after agreeing to a more or less amount of child support. To "opt out", its mandatory for the parents to sign a written agreement which states that parents are informed of the provisions of the Law on Child Support Guidelines, the amount of child support is required by the Standards Act Child Support and the reasons why they have chosen a different amount than the amount stipulated by the Act Child Support Guidelines.

Both the parties, due to a change of circumstances may request the Family Court of a change up or down, in a child support order. In general, a change in circumstances is defined as a change in the input of at least ten percent.

If the noncustodial parent makes a request to amend down due to lower earnings, the court will be very conservative in changing that order. Any voluntary reduction of income of the noncustodial parent may be frowned upon, resulting in denial of the request to reduce child support. Note that, even a reduction in salary due to lower bonus will probably result in the denial of approval of an amendment under a support order.

Child support stops when the child turns 21 or is emancipated before. In Suffolk, a child is emancipated when he or she marries, joins the armed forces, living alone and working full time. Noncustodial parent must submit a request for termination of the emancipation of the child support
