CCTV systems or close circuit television systems are a set of cameras that are used to transmit visual footage from some place to a set of monitors overseen by someone. cctv systems are normally used for security purposes to detect any unlawful presence of something or someone. Such systems are actually quite common in large office buildings as well as wealthy homes.

There are also other uses of CCTV systems.

The first and foremost is of course security purpose as previously mentioned. They are used in locations like prisons, educational centers, train stations, airports, ATMs etc. Basically in places where human surveillance is not possible at all times.

Apart from the most common use aforementioned, CCTVs are also used in scientific or military experiments where the instruments are remote controlled and it is dangerous for humans to be around the experiment site. Cameras used for this purpose of course are quite different from those used for security purposes.

Such systems are also used by traffic policemen to observe highway traffic or traffic at busy intersections. Though this is one of the kinds of security usage, it is different to an extent.

There are however various objections to CCTV systems mainly to the tune of loss of privacy. There have been many heated debates and court cases regarding these cameras. Therefore to install a CCTV system you have to obtain permission from competent authorities.

The only shortcoming of a CCTV is its inability to protect itself and have been subject to commonplace vandalism for those who want to vent their anger at being monitored. It is for this reason that CCTV systems come with dust resistant, damage proof, bullet proof casings that can take a beating.
