It is usually a piping, which is used to guide reaction exhaust gasses away from a controlled combustion inside an engine or a stove. It is a system, which conveys burnt gasses from an engine using these exhausts pipes. The pipe may be referred to a silencer in Europe or a muffler in North America. The design structure is important as it carries toxic gasses away fro the users of the machine. Most gasses, which are released from the machine is hot. Hence, it is important that these pipes are heat resistant.

In trucks or lorries often the system is covered by a perforated metal sheath. It is done to avoid people from getting burnt. In a two stroke engine or a dirt bike this pipe is referred to as an expansion chamber. These pipes are important as they allow engine to remain cool and increases the longevity of the vehicle.
