Artificial Dracena -Harmful to Pets

Plants deserve a place in your home. A household without greenery is like a day without sunshine. They are essential to a well-rounded decorating scheme. Of course, anyone with small children knows to keep only non-toxic plants within their reach. But fewer people may recognize the risk of plant toxicity to their pets.

There are plants that are safe to humans, but potentially harmful to your furry friends. For example, if you are the proud owner of cat or dog, you may want to consider choosing an artificial dracaena instead of a living one. There are countless stories of terrified pet owners who have discovered their canine or feline vomiting blood, refusing to eat, drooling excessively, and acting depressed, with no apparent cause. Upon closer investigation, many discover their pet has been chomping on their lovely dracaena plant on display in the living room. This can happen whether the dracaena is a new addition to your home décor, or a houseplant you’ve kept for years. Your kitty-cat may suddenly develop a daste for dracaena, heedless of the potential for adverse consequences to her health. This is why artificial dracaena may be a much safer option.

Dracaena plants are generally safe to human beings. Of course, it is not recommended that you make a meal out of yours. This is what separates us from the beasts: Our ability to behave rationally! Don’t be discouraged if Fido doesn’t take the same advice.

If you need proof that artificial dracaena is best for pets, just check with the ASPCA, a national authority on the humane treatment of animals. The ASPCA declares dracaena toxic to dogs and cats, thanks to its toxic principles known saponins. The ASPCA includes the following symptoms as signs of toxicity in animals:

Vomiting

Depression

Anorexia

Hyper-salivation

Dilated pupils

Any of the above signs in a pet living in a home where dracaena lives warrant a call to your local veterinarian.

If you’re sold on artificial dracaena, you may be surprised at the plethora of plants you can choose from. This exotic houseplant comes in small, medium, and large sizes—some with a single shoot and others with several. The leaves grow in varying shades of green, as well as variegated tones.
