Interlaken can be the perfect family holiday destination. Not only is it set between spectacular mountains and enhanced by two beautiful lakes, the town is also surrounded by numerous resorts and villages, providing visitors with seemingly endless things to do.

Families who are staying at the hotels in Interlaken city centre, will enjoy the centralised location and easy access to all of the town’s amenities. This is important for those travelling with small children. Those staying in the town’s centre can more readily take advantage of the local public transportation.

For your first day out on the town, enjoying a family walk along the shores of the Thunersee Lake or Brienzersee Lake is a spectacular way to see the area. Start at the West train station and make your way to Neuhaus, which is a small but wonderful nature reserve. You can always opt to catch the bus or take a boat, to get back to Interlaken.

Hiking is a popular activity around these parts, and there are plenty of hiking trails to choose from. One of the most popular areas is Harder Mountain, which is about 5 minutes from the Interlaken Ost Station. The Wilderswil train will take you to another popular hiking place, Schynige Platte Mountain.

Adventure sports that include canyoning, rock climbing, river rafting, hand gliding, paragliding and bungee jumping, are only a few of the options available for the adrenaline junkie. Summer activities include swimming in Neuhaus, or the nature reserve of Burgseeli. Sailing the surrounding lakes is another excellent way to enjoy a day. You can bring your own boat, or rent one, and even take sailing classes.

During the winter, skiing and snowboarding take over as the popular local activity. There are several areas where you can go to do this. The largest of these is the Jungfrau sport region, and you can get a day pass which includes the surrounding areas. For a real Swiss day of family fun, take the Faulhorn sledging challenge, which can be enjoyed day or night. The night-time sledging event includes a Swiss cheese fondue dinner!
