How a Walk in England Turns into a Trek Through the Himalayas

There is something magical and enlightening about a trekking tour through India. It satisfies our primal urge to be hunters and gatherers and harkens back to that prehistoric age when man wandered the globe in search of fire. Perhaps that is a bit romantically hyperbolic, but trekking does attract all sorts of people from all walks of life. From nature lovers and extreme sport enthusiasts to transcendental mystics and artists, trekking is way for people to return to nature. An adventure tour in India lets us escape from the steel and concrete confines of city life. To paraphrase the beat poet Alan Ginsberg, the idea of trekking lets us to throw our alarm clocks off the rooftop of the world in a protest against time. Of course, it is no longer an alarm clock that we are throwing off the rooftop, but a Blackberry, laptop, or any one the modern day technological gadgets that we have come to rely on. If you are thinking about going on a pilgrimage of self-discovery, then there are a few things that you should know about trekking in India. However, first you better dust off that ancient rucksack, find a suitable walking stick and a comfortable pair of shoes, as even a short trek in India is a bit longer that your morning walk to the London underground.

When it comes to trekking, there are many factors to keep in mind. The foothills of the Himalayas are carved with all sorts of trekking routes. There are low altitude and high altitude treks. Some trekking itineraries are far more extreme than others. Before you even consider a trekking tour, it is a good idea to seriously assess your level of physical fitness. You do not want to bite off more than you can chew. The last thing that you want is to have to be rescued by an emergency helicopter from a mountain pass in Darjeeling or Manali. Furthermore, some trekking tours are a lot like a triathlon. For example, mountain biking and rafting might also be part of the adventure package. Duration is also something you need to keep in mind. When you’re trekking and camping in the Himalayas, there is a big difference between a ten day tour and one that lasts three weeks.

England has a long history with walking tours. Whether you are hiking the Cornish coast or the Peak District, there is something both traditional and poetic about the idea of a walk. Trekking in India is an extension of that concept. In India, the quaint medieval tavern typically found in England has been replaced by a Buddhist monastery, and the foggy moorlands have been exchanged for sky-piercing Himalayan peaks.
