Online shopping is becoming a more frequent aspect among consumers nowadays. Major factors that contribute to online shopping are falling price of the best Internet deals and the increase in the number of online shops. Consumers don’t have to leave the comfort of their house to shop for goods and services. Everything is available at the click of the mouse.

In the late 1990’s it was just 8% American retailers who had sales web sites. Now you can see nearly 65% growth in that. This indicates that more people are participating in online shopping. Online shopping sites offers customers a wide range of advantages. Some of them are convenience, cheaper, faster and the availability of a range of products. You can buy groceries, toys, books, clothes, decorative items, music, movie, trendy foot wears etc. Along with the growth of online shoppers, the concerns regarding the safety of the online purchases are also increasing.

How can you be safe while doing online shopping?

Use personal computer – It is always advisable to log on to online shopping sites from your home computer, rather than from a public computer. You should ensure that you are using computers that have access only to you and your partner. This can help you to save your personal and credit card details. Make sure you don’t save any credit card information on the sites you last visited.

Look for secure site indicators – Whenever you visit a website make sure the site is using a secure socket layer, or SSL, indicator. The sites that use SSL indicator will show the yellow padlock on the top of the browser. The SSL indicator ensures that the data we enter into the online shopping site will be encrypted and safe. You can also check the web address of the particular website. Go for online shopping on sites that has web address starting with “https:”, instead of “http:” The ‘s’ in “https:” stands for secured site. Some of the web browsers had introduced certain tools that clearly indicate whether the online website is safe or not. Such tools can help the shopper to identify best and secure online shopping websites.

Different ways to protect your privacy and identity – One of the fraudulent activities taking place on web is identity theft. Protecting your personal details in a proper way can minimize the possibility of online thefts. Most of the shopping websites ask for username and password when you try to log on to their websites. Make sure you change your username and password after each usage. Try not to keep your login details near your computer or places near that. Such type of preventive measure discourages hackers from tracing out your identity details.

Some of the online retailers ask for personal details including your social security number and account details. Since most of the simple online shopping doesn’t require such type of details, you should not encourage it.

Make your online payments on a safe mode – Making payments on the credit card is a good practice. When credit cards use the credit payer’s money, debit card uses the debit card user’s money. As most of the credit card companies will have a highly protected payment system, it is advisable to use credit for online payments. Always try to minimize the use of debit cards and other direct methods of payment. There are online retailers who don’t accept credit cards. In such cases, go for some other safer modes of payment like PayPal.

Whenever you go for online shopping, make sure you have the complete address of the domestic or international merchant. To ensure the delivery of the purchased item, you can insist for a track delivery, while keeping the record of transaction details.
