Wireless Bridges - What are they?

Wireless bridge devices are used to connect two distinct networks in order to get them to share resources and internet access. They are especially useful when connecting two physically distant networks when installing a wire between them is difficult. In a typical setup one uses two wireless bridge devices: one connected to each network and setup to generate a bridge between itself and the other.

Normally, one wireless bridge has a variety of modes – wireless bridging being just one of them. These modes tend to be wireless router, wireless repeater or wireless bridge. There are, however, a modest number of quality products available that are committed bridges. These tend to be extremely simple to set up (in comparison with a multi-mode device that may require more detailed configuration).

Does your home or office have multiple isolated wired networks (on separate floors maybe)? You may use a wireless bridge configuration to solve your dilemma. bridges are commonly deployed when some non-wirelessly capable devices need to be added to an existing wireless network some distance away. In that case, all the cabled computers or other devices are connected to a bridge device, which is then setup to connect wirelessly to the main router.

Some key features you may want to look out for when searching for a wireless bridge are compatibility, range and ease of setup. The latest technology in high-speed wireless connection is Wireless-N. This technology has the range and capacity to handle the high bandwidth requirements of gaming systems and streaming high-definition video. Some wireless-ready devices are not Wireless-N compatible, however; in particular older devices will need a bridge that’s Wireless-B or Wireless-G compatible. It’s a good idea, then to obtain backwards-compatible wireless bridges to cover all bases (almost all of them are, but just in case).

While shopping for a wireless bridge, knowing the length needed for the bridge is important. If the distance in question is fairly small (for example, in cases where the wireless signal already reaches the area in question but there are non-wirelessly capable devices) this wouldn’t play much of a role, but for larger distances to be bridged a higher-quality device with a high range would be in order. The best measure for this is likely to be looking over consumer reviews to see what other owners of the device have managed to do with the bridge in question.

And last, it’s recommended to buy a device with straightforward installation instructions if possible. Sometimes the documentation can be somewhat incomprehensible, and if you don’t have much knowledge in the area you might run into trouble. Again this is a place where reviews by other users are a valuable place to look; additionally, sometimes looking online for help will get you a helpful comprehensive outline to set up your wireless bridge if you’re having difficulties.
