Two Simple Ways to Play or Convert MTS Files on Mac
MTS video format is a form of AVCHD. AVCHD is the abbreviation for Advanced Video Coding High Definition. It is a HD video format. This format was developed by Panasonic and Sony, jointly in the year 2006. Their intention was to introduce a format for HD video recording and playback. In the process, they developed AVCHD. Now a day, Sony, Panasonic and Canon use this format on their HD camcorders. MTS is a form of this AVCHD. There are three extensions that it uses. They are MTS, M2T and M2TS. They all are HD MPEG transport stream video format.
You may get in trouble with MTS files. The reason is that MTS video format is supported by the camcorders but when you extract them on your Mac for playback or for editing, you will see that it is incompatible. If you try it on QuickTime player or iTunes, you will get unsupported error. If you try them on your iPhone or iPod, again you will be disappointed.
There are two ways through which you can use MTS files on Mac.
1. VLC Media player: VLC media player is an open source video player. It is a freeware that is developed by Project VideoLan. This media player can play a lot of video formats that Mac does not supports which includes MTS files. It has different versions made specifically for different platforms, so in a sense it is platform independent. You can download the specific version for your OS (Operating System).
2. Video converter: Many may frown against the idea of using a video converter as there is a common concept that video converters lower the video quality. That is not true for a good video converter. In fact, video converter is the best way to handle an unsupported video format. Whichever video format you are struggling with, you can just convert it to a compatible format and you can start working. That is the flexibility you can get with the right video converter.
In case of MTS files, you can convert it to any of three QuickTime video formats. There are three formats by QuickTime which are MOV, MP4 and M4V. These three formats are supported by all Apple devices and video related applications. Therefore you should convert your MTS files to one of those video formats. Recommendation would be to convert MTS to MOV Mac.
Question is which video converter to use? According to the common concept, video converters lower the video quality. You cannot allow that for any resolution. If the quality of HD is lowered then what is the use of a HD video?
The concept is not entirely false. There are video converters that can lower the video quality by making it darker or by making the video grainy or blocky or striped or hazy or foggy etc. There are also video converters that can produce corrupt video files rather than perform perfect conversion. You will never face those sorts of problems with Video Converter for Mac by iSkysoft. It is a great video converter that can help you with your videos all the way.
If you wish only to play the MTS files, then downloading VLC media player is enough. If you are planning to do more, a video converter is your best choice.
