A polished wooden floor, a flowing dress, strong arms, high heels and the booming beats – salsa truly is the marriage of elegance, passion and intoxicating music. While this awesome dance form originated in Cuba, it has now garnered enough popularity to be considered one of the most favorite dance forms of people all around the globe. You do not even have to be an expert dancer or understand the words like ‘merengue’, ‘bechata’, ‘tumbao’ and ‘clave’, in order to feel the beat in your movements. Once you hear the amazing salsa music, you start shaking a leg before even knowing it.

Many people find salsa dance music a bit difficult to follow. It is because this music does not follow a constant, standard rhythm. It keeps changing now and then ad becomes faster or slower at places. However, after a certain point of time it not only becomes easier to follow but understand too. You start enjoying this unevenness without even realizing it. If you ever visit a salsa congress you will see that there are lots of people dancing on the same floor to the same music; but each pair is following a different rhythm and making different moves. Now, how is that possible, right?

The reason behind that is salsa music is essentially the melody of enjoyment at its core. It is a kind of music that offers its dancers full freedom to follow any move that they want to. You can change your step, adapt, shift, rock, turn, twirl or fizzle at any given time and you will still manage to come up with some of the best moves that any salsa dancer has ever rocked to. However, it has to be noted here that salsa dance music has come a long way since it first originated and the music we enjoy now, is merely a mixture of the many forms of it.

Each of the forms of salsa music has its own flavor, appeal and history. But one thing is for sure – slowly but steadily, they all make you groove to them. There are some that are perfect for slow dancing while there are some others that will force you to jump up and shake everything you have got.

Some of the most popular forms of salsa dance music are ‘salsa classica’, ‘salsa romantica’ and ‘salsa dura’. Formed in the 1960s salsa classica has been lead by legends like Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe and Tito Puente. All these artists created a style that is considered the archetype of the genre. It is this archetype that is used as the defining base by newer artists and bands. The most famous albums of this form are Siembra (1978, 2006) and La Voz (1999). Salsa romantic is, however, the product of 80s and 90s era and follows a sentimental ballad approach to the Afro-Cuban beats. The lyrics also focus on passionate romatic themes rather than socio-political issues. Reputed artists of this form include Eddie Santiago, Frankie Ruiz, Lalo Rodriguez and Luis Enrique. Salsa dura, on the other hand, means hard salsa. It is in a way return to the classica form and has pulsing rhythm, long vamps calld 'montuno', etc. The most noted of salsa dura are Grupo Niche, Sonora Carruseles, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Joe Arroyo and Fruko y sus Tesos, El Gran Combo, La Excelencia, etc.
