DJs: How to Distinguish the Good from the Bad

Booking a professional DJ is one of the best decisions you can make to ensure a successful event. But how do you know you are getting the very best available? Here are a few guidelines to help you distinguish the good DJs from the bad:

1. A good DJ has a ton of experience and a long list of satisfied clients who wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them and they will always be prepared to provide you with their list upon request.

2. Reputable agencies will want to promote them. An agency’s reputation is at stake anytime they choose to take on new talent. Therefore, you can trust that they will only want to work with the best DJs. Begin your search through an agency that represents those that specialize in the specific type of event you are hosting.

3. A good DJ has a large music collection that can accommodate a wide variety of musical interests. If they don’t have your song, they will get it. When you hire a good DJ, you will never have to worry about providing your own music so long as the song is not one of your own home recordings or otherwise unavailable to the general public on CD, vinyl or MP3 download.

4. They have all the best, most up-to-date Pro Audio equipment from Denon to Dynacord, EV to Shure, and so on. They use high output speaker systems capable of handling many thousands of watts of crisp, clear sound and sound activated LED lighting panels to help light up the dance floor. A really good DJ will also bring pre-assembled backup equipment should any of their main equipment unexpectedly fail during the event.

5. A good DJ has a winning personality and knows how to engage a crowd. They will speak the first language of the majority of the guests in attendance at your event. With a positive attitude and easy banter, they will be capable of encouraging even your most reluctant guests out onto the dance floor.

6. They will form a kind of partnership with you, listen carefully to your needs, consider your special requests and offer helpful suggestions of their own based on past experiences. For example, if you want your DJ to provide a bit of narrative to go along with a presentation or a video photomontage, you can agree on a specific script ahead of time, or provide a general outline and request the DJ improvise some of their own thoughts and observations.

Along with the guidelines listed above, you will know you’ve found a good DJ when their #1 priority is the complete success of your event. Don’t settle for anything less than the very best!
