What to look for when getting your first powerkite.

Powerkiting is very easy to learn if you get the right advice from the beginning. These little monsters can generate a lot of power and can be dangerous in wrong hands. Therefore, talking to someone who knows more about power kites is a smart move before you consider getting yourself a kite.

When it comes to choosing your first kite there are couple of things you need to consider. The first thing you need to ask yourself is what you would like to do with it. Powerkiting is not limited to recreational flying. Today, powerkiting offers you more than such static flying on the beach or in an open field. Kitesurfing, kite buggying, kite landboarding and snow kiting are some of the few sports you can do using a power kite. Body dragging, kite jumping and skidding can also be added to the list. Once you decide what you would like to do with a kite, choosing the equipment suitable for the activity you want to do is easy.

It is not one fits all!

Each activity requires a specific design kite to offer maximum performance and safety. For static flying, 2 or 4 line power kite around 1.5 square meter to 3.5 square meter is ideal. Anything bigger than that can be challenging for static flyers. In other words, biggger the kite the more power it generates. Therefore getting the biggest kite is not the best idea especially if you are new to the sport.

If you would like to get into traction sports such as buggying or landboarding then you need a bigger kite than what you would use for static flying. The reason for this is because the kite needs to generate more power to be able to pull both your weight and the buggy's or landboard's weight so you can travel across the wind. The good news is unlike static kite flying, the kite feels lighter on your hands when you are travelling with it. Therefore flying a bigger power kites when you are moving with it is easier than you think. However, I still suggest you get a small size kite whihc is ideal for static flying so you can learn how to fly first. In other words don't try to run before you can walk!

Sidewards or Upwards?

Kites can be designed differently depending on their purpose. Some kites are good for side-way pull while others are good for upward pull. If you like getting dragged on the ground or pulled in a buggy then you need a kite that generates side-way pull. However, if you are an adventurous person and are not scared of heights you need a kite that gives you lift! I must warn you that you really need some experience before you can get a kite that creates lift.

Here are some points you need to keep in mind before you buy your first kite:

Size of kite: The bigger the kite the more power it generates.

Wind conditions: the stronger the wind the smaller kite you need.

Your weight: the heavier you are the bigger the kite you need.

Following power kites are recommended for the activity group they fall into:

• Static Flying: Flexifoil Sting, HQ Symphony Beach

• Kite Buggying: Flexifoil Blurr, Peter Lynn Reactor, Peter Lynn Hornet

• Kite Landboarding: Flexifoi Rage, HQ Beamer

• Jumping, skudding: Flexifoil Blade
